My name is Amanda (Schneider) Prince, and I am running for Hooper City Council, District 1. I was raised in Hooper and have been blessed to live here for most of my life. I truly believe there is no place like Hooper. My childhood was filled with carefree days of running through fields of alfalfa with my siblings, buying penny candy at The Hooper Country Store, playing on the swings at Hooper Park, listening to my dad announce the annual “Old Timer’s” baseball game at the Tomato Days celebration, enjoying Little Buckaroo hamburgers from The Ranch House, and keeping Mr. Peterson (Gerald and Bill) on their toes at Hooper Elementary. I will always treasure these memories. There was a time when I could tell you who lived in almost every house in West Hooper. Things have definitely changed since then. Although Hooper has grown, we have been able to preserve much of our roots and the community connection that sets small towns apart and makes them so desirable. My heart smiles every time I pass someone on the road and receive that famous “Hooper wave”. I have a profound love for this place we call home, and a strong desire to preserve it, so future generations can experience the magic of growing up in a place like this. For this reason, I have decided to run for Hooper City Council. I have a deep reverence for our country and our constitution and have been politically active for 27 years. I believe that when you care about something, you do what you can to protect it, and at this time in my life, that means moving out of my comfort zone and throwing my name into the ring for this election.
For the past 5 1/2 years, I have had the honor of serving on the Hooper City Planning Commission. This experience has provided me with valuable insights into the role and function of our local government and the unique challenges we are facing. We are experiencing tremendous pressure to change Hooper into something that will be unrecognizable to many of us in just a few years’ time. This greatly concerns me, and I feel the need to do all I can to help preserve this little piece of heaven we are fortunate enough to call ours.
Experience
In addition to serving on the Hooper City Planning Commission for 5 1/2 years, I was a member of the Hooper City Advisory Board for the recent General Plan revision. I have put in numerous hours researching and familiarizing myself with state code and Hooper City ordinances. I have attended or watched almost every city council and planning commission meeting for the past several years. I helped to establish and run the monthly Hooper Tomato Jam, which spotlights our impressive local talent. I’ve had the privilege of volunteering at Hooper Tomato Days for several years. I was honored to be trusted and elected to serve our community as a state and county delegate. I recently worked as a volunteer on a state scholarship appeal committee and have served in several other church and civic volunteer and leadership positions over the years. I was employed for 9 years in the mortgage industry, and also worked part-time at Hooper Irrigation for several years. However, my most meaningful and cherished job is that of a wife and mother. My husband, Kevin, is my best friend and biggest supporter. I am blessed to have him in my life. I also have 3 amazing adult children, one wonderful son-in-law, and a vivacious 11-year-old daughter who I have been fortunate enough to homeschool for the past 5 years.
My life experiences have taught me the importance of leading and serving with integrity and accountability, listening with an open heart and mind, and taking time to do things the right way, rather than the quickest or easiest way. There is merit in the motto “measure twice, cut once”.
Hooper is at a pivotal point in time. We are facing the challenges that come with unprecedented growth, budgetary concerns, and economic development. It is crucial that we work together to devise and implement carefully thought out resolutions to these challenges. I believe the best solutions come from those who will be most affected by them. Hooper should decide what happens to Hooper. Progress happens by listening to and digesting different viewpoints. I am committed to respecting your concerns and suggestions and working together with you to find the best path forward. I truly believe “there’s no place like Hooper”, and that’s something to be celebrated and cherished. I am asking for your vote and support in electing me as your Hooper City Council District 1 Representative. Let’s make and keep Hooper the place we want it to be!
Thank you!
